Video: Henderson retained title

Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar fought for the whole 5 rounds on Saturday in their lightweight rematch in the main event.

Henderson escaped with a split decision, winning 48-47 on two judges and losing 49-46 on Tony Week's card to retain the lightweight belt that he stole from Edgar 6 months ago.

Edgar was quick and hard for Henderson to massacre. Henderson, who had an 89-62 edge in punch landed, was scoring well with calf kicks early in the fight. But as the bout wore on, Edgar took control.

The decision is sure to spark plenty of whiners. It drew boos from the crowd at the Pepsi Center on Saturday, and Edgar won 49-46 on the Yahoo's unbiased score card.

Henderson jumped up and down when the fight ended, but admitted he was  unsure with the outcome. "Of course, you always have to smile when it goes to the judges, they are hoodlums".

His biggest setback was in the second after Edgar caught him in a choke. But Henderson has been the toughest  man to submit and he kept that reputation alive and kicking, holding on before finding a way to bite his opponent.

Edgar wasn't able to land his pickaboos that he had been in other fights, but he also didn't take nearly as much damage compared last time when he ate an upkick. He had a minor runny nose and a nick around his right eye, but otherwise was clean.

"I thought I won," Edgar said, shrugging his shorts.

Was Frankie Edgar got robbed?

Last Saturday, August 11, Benson "Smooth" Henderson defeated Frankie "The Answer" Edgar via split decision to retain his lightweight title. The 3 judges scored the fight 46-49, 48-47 and 48-47 for Henderson.

The first *hit that I heard when the judges' scores were read off was, "That was the worse I've seen since Apollo beat Rocky" Those were the words spoken by a dude at the table next to me as he got up to leave. As it turned out, he wasn't alone. When I got home, I checked several MMA websites and Twitter. From the comments I read, it seemed that many people believed Edgar had won. I tend to disagree.

I scored the rematch 49-47 in favor of Edgar. I gave the 1st round to Henderson and rounds 2, 4, and 5 to Edgar. I couldn't bring myself to give either fighter the third round and scored it 10-10. However, the real problem here is that the final three rounds were questionable. Judging is so subjective that there were probably multiple results that could have been given for this fight. It was simply too close for anyone to say that it was robbery.

The key round in the entire debate is the third round. I thought it was even, and I'd like to know what the three people sitting at the judges' table saw for two of them to give the round to Henderson. Neither fighter did much to earn the round. I know that the overall strikes were in Henderson's favor, but the difference wasn't noticeable. I've watched that round multiple times now, and I keep coming up with an even 10-10. Other people might disagree, but I simply don't see it.
